Local 234 has a great apprenticeship and training program on a 280 site in Indianola, IA. There, we have the classrooms and hands-on equipment necessary to prepare future operating engineers with the skills needed to be successful in our industries.
Our full apprenticeship program consists of 6,000 hours of training (192 hours of correspondent training, 240 hours of classroom time, and the balance in on-the-job training).
Local 234 was formed by the merger of three Iowa locals in 1950. Operating as a "mixed" local union, 234 represents both H&P (equipment operators and mechanics) and stationary workers (building engineers, manufacturing, utilities, etc.). The union operates out of a main office in Des Moines and other offices in Cedar Rapids, Sioux City, Dubuque, and Mason City. 234's jurisdiction covers all of Iowa with the exception of the seven most southeast counties in the state.
