Our members participate in the Local 406 Welfare Fund. Like our pension, our members' health care benefits are provided entirely by the employers. Again, unlike most non-union employment relationships, our members' health insurance is not purchased through a payroll deduction - it is included above and beyond your negotiated hourly wage.
Training and Certifications
As mentioned, Local 406 has a great training program. The Local owns 250 acres in Robert, LA where apprentices and journeyman can come to upgrade their skills - and consequently their wages and employability. Our Apprenticeship and Educational Program offers training in Crane Operator Certification (NCCCO), Forklift Certification, HazMat Training, and instruction for Stationary Engineers.
More information on the Local and benefits can be found by clicking on this Local 406 Flyer.
The International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local Union #406 was chartered in 1910 and represents over 3,000 people in Louisiana and Mississippi. Local 406's members work as equipment operators and stationary engineers, in casinos, public works, and shipbuilding, and in off-shore fabrication and stevedoring.
Benefits of Membership
Local 406's diverse membership can benefit from our great training resources and from employment opportunities with our many signatory contractors. Our members receive a fair wage and great benefits, which are negotiated by Local 406 and voted on by the membership.
Another of the great benefits of membership is a defined benefit pension. The IUOE Central Pension Fund provides lifetime benefits for retirees with at least ten years of vested credit. As a member, for each hour you work, your employer makes the contribution to your pension. Unlike a lot of 401K plans, there are NO payroll deductions necessary in our pensions! Another benefit of our pensions is that they follow you from job to job, one employer to the next...even if you go to work for a signatory contractor in a different part of the country.
